Overview

Facilitate the communication of information between vessel and shoreside personnel including transmission of orders, gathering of traffic, coordination of dockside activities and notification of incidents.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with Houston dispatch, Sales, Customers, and all vessel & barge movements within Lake Charles.
  • Communicate with vessels via VHF radio and Oasis computer program, enter Trip information and orders as well as all fleeting (Kirby and 3rd Party) into Oasis program to ensure trip related requirements are met.
  • Contact Vessel or Barge M&R to coordinate repairs.
  • Set up Tank Barge PIC and coordinate with Logistics Management as needed.
  • Coordinate & assist and general fleeting operations.
  • Maintain communications with Kirby Traffic in the coordination of trip details and the possible assignment of horsepower.
  • Coordinate all barge movements in/out of Kirby fleet while keeping daily logs and assigning daily fleet inspections. 
  • Knowledge of Facility Security Plan and control all person(s) entering and leaving the gated facility.  
  • Participate in required security drills and exercises
  • Perform required screening & documentation pending current MARSEC level.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Education:

High School Diploma or GED.

 

Experience:

Minimum 1 year dispatch experience or towing industry experience; will consider college degree in place of experience.

 

Special Requirements:

  • TWIC required.

 

Physical Activities & Requirements:

  • Capable of walking approx. 1 mile.
  • Must be able to independently walk up and down multiple flights of stairs, including in buildings without elevator access. This may be required during routine duties or emergency situations and could occur several times throughout the day.
  • Ability to step across, up, down, or over an obstacle to gain access to docks from the barge to the boat or from boat to the dock.
  • Close vision for reading documents and computer screens.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment.
  • Ability to speak and hear clearly with internal and external stake holders.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk or workstation.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required by the position, location, and/or customer.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Work a 12-hour rotating shift (7 on/7 off rotating days and night shifts,) with alternating on call schedule for dispatchers to provide 24-hour continuous dispatch coverage.
  • Must be able to work in an open and busy environment and handle a fluctuating workload and intermittent high-stress.
  • Must be able to adapt to work areas such as, industrial work areas, towing vessels, tank barges, and Kirby or customer facilities as required.
  • May be exposed to harsh natural elements, such as intense heat, freezing cold, rain, ice, sleet, and various other environmental conditions.
  • Duties primarily take place in office environment.
  • Duties could take place at the dock with occasional daytime boarding of boats/barges. Typically, does not require overnight stays on boats/barges.
